Foods That Help Your Child's Mouth Fight Cavities

Posted on 6/30/2017 by Lindsey A. Robinson DDS Office
A little boy suffering from tooth decay!.
Children are often prone to cavities because they like sweeter foods and because they aren't as adept at brushing as adults. However, that doesn't mean that we, as parents, have to make getting cavities any easier.

Some of the foods that we feed our children can help their mouth fight off cavities. If your child isn't getting their teeth as clean as you or their dentist would like, try adding some of these foods into the mix. It can help!

Items to Make Sure Your Child Consumes

Make sure your child goes out of their way to eat cheese daily. The more cheese they eat, the healthier their teeth can be. This is not only due to the calcium, but also due to the casein in the cheese helping to fight cavities.

You should also include gum as part of their daily routine, once they are old enough. You want to offer them gum with Xylitol, as this is a great cavity fighter. Use this between meals, and especially after meals when they aren't home to brush.

The same goes with sugar-free candy that's been sweetened with Xylitol. Raisins are something often overlooked as a healthy option for kids, because the assumption is that they are full of sugar.

However, when you look at the dental benefits, they often outweigh the potential risks. Raisins, much like wine would provide for an adult, are great at killing off much of the bacteria in your mouth that leads to tooth decay.

Allowing your children to eat raisins as a snack can provide them with the opportunity to have fewer cavities, and get the health benefits that can come with them.
